Diana at the Billboard Awards (December 8, 2004)

The following is taken from the Diana-web.com Message Board, and was written by Lance:

For those of you who missed it, Wonder Diva Diana Ross rocked the 2004 Billboard Music Awards in honor of special Billboard Century Award recipient Stevie Wonder.

Following an introduction by legendary producer Quincy Jones and tributes by Mary J Blige and Destiny's Child, Ross took center stage with a majestic entry befitting of a true legend.

With a montage of still pictures scrolling across the screen (solo pics and pics of Ross with Stevie), Ross could be heard la-la-ing to the strains of My Cherie Amour, and then bam - the lights lit up and there the Queen of Motown stood in full regalia atop a staircase likened to the staging of her current concert tour, and reminiscent of the film noir, Diva.

She then segued her way into a chorus of I Just Called To Say I Love You looking absolutely radiant. The perfectly coiffed mane of hair; the trademark eyes beaming with love; the silky voice now a tad powdery than her yesteryears but ever the moreso tender; the creamy caramel skin covered from neck to toe by a ruffled red garment.

The audience roared with approval -- the kind of approval that clearly distinguised Ross as the supreme Supreme; a true diva to today's divettes.

Then bang! As the beat pounced to For Once In My Life, Ross flung down her arms right on cue, and what appeared to be the ruffled cape was revealed to actually be a cabaret-like tail to a sleek, sexy red mini-dress that masqueraded a svelt figure befitting of a 30 year-old. Aretha and Tina would've fallen off their seats seeing their 60-year-old peer mesmerize the young Vegas crowd.

Once again the audience lavished Ross with their approval with screams and cheers and arms in the air. She got them on their feet in no time and Stevie could be seen shedding a tear.

Then Ross dished out yet another divalicious crowd pleaser: the ruffled cape-like tail was ripped entirely off, and Ross, in her red mini, worked the stage and crowd into a frenzy.

A standing ovation was inevitable as Ross lifted her arms in triumph.

"Please, please welcome ladies and gentlemen, Century Award winner, ladies and gentlemen, the one and only, S... genius ... Stevie, Stevie Wonder!," she said as the strains of Very Superstitious accompanied Little Stevie Wonder to the stage.

And there they could be seen: Motown legend to Motown legend in a long, heartfelt embrace. Wayne Gretzky and Gloria Estefan, along with the entire stadium, stood mesmerized. Smiles could be seen and applause could be heard coming from everyone -- from Usher and Alica Keys to Paris Hilton and Britney Spears.

The vibe was clearly euphoric and Wonder kept the electricity alive by tearing into a song himself with Ross to his right side dancing and getting the audience to do likewise; to his left stood Quincy Jones, Mary J Blige and Destiny's Child.

It was obvious that Ross, a long time friend of Wonder's (he penned and produced her track Force Behind The Power; and she has frequently covered his songs like Ribbon In The Sky and Too Shy To Say; and he also sang I Just Called To Say I Love You at her wedding to Arne Naess)was happy to pay homage to him -- ever the moreso as Ross will share the stage with other singers only on special occasion.

Forget the critics who often chastise Ross for not having the pipes of an over-wired soul siren; it was clear that Ross has, and always will be, in a class of her own.

Ross proved once again that she is a top notch performer who knows how to enthrall an audience with her mere stage presence, enigmatic energy, and boundless talent.

No "wonder" she was awarded Billboard's coveted Entertainer of the Century award three decades ago (a different, but nonetheless prestigious honor).

A big thank you to Lance.

Diana planning book, live DVD and more

The following short interview is from The Rocky Mountain News:

Though Diana Ross doesn't have control over where her classic work in the Supremes is played or licensed - movies, commercials and the like - she has put her imprint on it. The four-CD Supremes box set got her input, as did the Forever Diana box set blending both her group and solo careers.

"That's mine. I did that myself. We picked the color, the picture on the back, the title, everything about it, the book inside, everything," she says. "That was my personal project. I just really wanted it to be more out there."

It's a hard balance between looking forward and looking back, she says.

"I stay busy all the time, with singing and my family and touring and traveling. It keeps me vital and young and modern. So to stop, it takes me back to the past. I like to stay with being in the moment, being now, and being in the future. Or at least thinking forward," she says.

Still, she's trying to get more of her past in order. She's planning a book (not the 'Upside Down' book which is, according to reports, cancelled - webmaster's comment) combined with a live DVD to give a history of her career. She also has a huge project ahead: her career's worth of costumes, many designed by legends such as Bob Mackie.

"I really want someone to go through all my costumes with me, put those into a museum. I have so many costumes from the past. I keep everything. It's crazy, but I keep everything."

Where Did Our Love Go Deluxe Edition!

The following is from Billboard's Fred Bronson's "Chart Beat Chat":

Motown hasn't forgotten the 40th anniversary of the first Supremes' No. 1 hit on The Billboard Hot 100. In October, the label will release a double CD deluxe anniversary edition of the "Where Did Our Love Go" album with all songs in mono as well as stereo, plus rare and unreleased tracks.

I have a lot of memories of the single "Where Did Our Love Go" being released, because I had just started working in a record store. I shared those memories with reissue producer Andy Skurow, who is writing the liner notes for the new "Where Did Our Love Go" CD, so I won't post them here, in case he decides to include any of my thoughts. Check out the essay in October in case any of my recollections were included.

Andy had a long interview with writer/producer Lamont Dozier for the liner notes, and also talked to people like Dick Clark, who was touring the country with his Caravan of Stars when "Where Did Our Love Go" was released. The Supremes were at the bottom of the bill when they first went on the road, but during the tour the single climbed to No. 1, and the trio quickly moved up the bill.

Diana Ross packs in popular tunes at Greenwich benefit

GREENWICH -- On what was described as a perfect night, a legendary Motown diva transported more than 2,000 people back through 40 years of her career last night as she belted out song after song at a 90-minute show.

"Hello, Greenwich," Diana Ross called out as she opened her concert at Roger Sherman Baldwin Park.

"I'm going to do a lot of songs tonight," she said, delivering nearly two dozen of her most popular songs, interrupted only by a few costume changes, a solo sung by her son and a short dance from a new Greenwich High School graduate who joined her on stage.

"Thank you very much," Ross said during one of the few breaks. "I can't see you all but I know you all are there."

The 60-year-old Greenwich resident threw the free concert to help celebrate the Greenwich High School graduation and as a benefit for the Arch Street Teen Center.

In addition to people who sat on the lawn, there were 400 people who paid between $250 and $1,000 for prime seats, proceeds of which will go to the center, said executive director Kyle Silver.

"It's a lot more money we're going to have than we had last week," Silver said.

Ross' two children from her second marriage, Evan and Ross Naess, are active at the teen center, Silver said, adding that the money couldn't have come at a better time.

"We were looking at a deficit," he said. "It will help pay the bills."

The event also was an opportunity for Evan Naess, 15, who also is taking acting classes, to show off his singing talents as he sang the Stevie Wonder song, "Overjoyed."

"I always like singing that song," he said, calling it an uplifting one in an interview before the concert.

Evan has heard his mother sing all his life, and it's difficult to pick out a favorite among her songs, he said.

"Lately, I really love 'Endless Love'," he said.

Ross was singing that song last night and as she looked over to where Evan and Ross Naess stood with some of their friends, she threw them a kiss.

The concert also gave Lawrence Haywood, who hours earlier attended his graduation ceremony at Greenwich High School, a chance to steal a few moments in the spotlight as he ran on stage to join Ross, show a few dance moves and give her a hug.

"It made my day," Haywood said. "It just felt good to be up there."

"I had to take my friend up there," Evan said of Haywood. "He's a silly guy, good guy."

Going to the concert was a no-brainer, said Tom Smith, 44, of Shelton, who along with his wife, each paid $500 for VIP seats.

"There's just no way we could turn this down," he said. Hearing Ross sing was only part of the attraction, said his wife, Bobbi, 45.

"I don't think there could have been a more perfect night," she said as the sun was starting to set right before the concert. "It's not hot, it's not cold."

Steve Griffith, 35, of Greenwich, remembered growing up in Trinidad listening to and memorizing Ross' songs. He saw her twice in concert before lining up yesterday for one of the free seats.

"She's a true diva," he said.

The last time Ross, who has lived in the Belle Haven section of town for about 20 years, held a concert in Greenwich was in 1998. That event benefited the scholarship fund at Greenwich Academy, where her daughter, Chudney, had graduated five years earlier.

The Ross family will always have a special place in their heart for Greenwich, Evan said.

"This will be our home regardless of where we live," he said. "I love it here."

THE SUPREMES – 'THERE’S A PLACE FOR US' - PREORDER NOW!
Unreleased LP & More - LIMITED EDITION, only 5000 available.
To be released July 9, preorder now at www.hip-oselect.com

This is the info given on the Hip-O Select website:

RELEASE DATE: JULY 9TH
Edition limited to 5000 individually numbered copies.

The simultaneous rise of Motown Records and The Supremes is now part of the pop culture: a fantastic story of how Diana Ross, Mary Wilson and Florence Ballard, three young ladies from Detroit’s Brewster projects, spend three years as the company’s pet ‘no-hit’ group, until a song rejected by one group becomes theirs and “Where Did Our Love Go” shoots to No. 1. The Supremes follow it with four more No. 1 hits in a row, and those three ladies rise from B-status to A-plus in a hurry, helping Motown founder Berry Gordy realize his dream of a black-owned record company making it to the top of the heap.

Gordy’s dream got wider: it not only included millions of youth but their parents too, and The Supremes helped promote the crossover. Fans know of the famous Copacabana appearances, and their tribute albums to Sam Cooke, country & western music, and the British Invasion. What many have heard, but never knew for sure, is that in 1965, in the midst of mainstream TV appearances, smash tours and that string of memorable No. 1’s, the Supremes recorded a variety of standards and show tunes associated with the likes of Al Jolson, Tony Bennett, Judy Garland, Frank Sinatra, Sammy Davis Jr. and Perry Como. A title was announced: There’s A Place For Us, taken from a line in “Somewhere,” from the musical West Side Story, a song widely used as a euphemism for civil rights. Yet the resulting 12-track album was never released. Motown instead issued a Supremes Christmas album and a live recording from the Copa. The studio recordings, except brief appearances by a few cuts, disappeared into Motown legend.

Then came the crack producers at Hip-O Select. Yes, deep in the Motown vault, there is an album, in stereo – labeled, simply, “Supremes Place For Us” – lovingly recorded by producers Hal Davis and Marc Gordon in Los Angeles, and Harvey Fuqua, Ron Miller, Ivy Jo Hunter and Mickey Stevenson in Detroit. Everything from classics like “Rock-A-Bye Your Baby With A Dixie Melody” (a hit for both Al Jolson and Aretha Franklin) to “Make Someone Happy,” from Do Re Mi, to Motown originals like “Little Miss Loser,” co-written by Ron Miller before “For Once In My Life” hit the charts. Diana, Mary and Florence are at their diverse best. While Diana ably handles most of the lead vocals, Mary is featured on “Our Day Will Come.”

But wait, there’s more.

This exclusive Select edition of this album includes an incredible 14 bonus tracks, more than the original LP, and here’s how: we’ve added two more songs from the original LP sessions, including “People,” featuring Flo, and “I Am Woman, You Are Man,” different than the later version released on The Supremes Sing And Perform Funny Girl; three songs from another legendary ‘unreleased’ album, A Tribute to The Girls, which was discovered to be unfinished; an outtake from I Hear A Symphony, “All Of A Sudden My Heart Sings,” originally from the film Anchors Aweigh, here produced by Holland-Dozier, who also produced seven of the eight tracks included here from another unfinished unreleased album, The Supremes And The Motown Sound: From Broadway To Hollywood. Total: nearly 78 minutes of music from the Motown archives, 26 tracks, only 9 of which have been issued and spread around various collections before.

All of this beautiful music comes in a deluxe digipak, with a new essay, detailed recording annotations and many rare and never-before-seen photos of the one and only Supremes.

Diana Ross surprises town with free concert

At first, Kyle Silver didn't believe it was really Diana Ross on the other end of the phone.

"She called me personally on Wednesday. For a second I thought it was a joke," recalled Silver, executive director of the Arch Street teen center, where Ross' two sons -- Evan and Ross Naess -- are active members. "I mean, when does that ever happen? Then she said, 'Listen, I have this idea I want to talk to you about. Can you come over?' I asked her when and she said, 'How about in the next 15 minutes?' "

Silver drove straightaway to Ross' Belle Haven home, where she told him about a free concert she had in mind, something the two had discussed briefly last summer at a dinner and silent auction benefiting the center.

"She said she was performing Friday in Atlantic City and wanted to bring the band and everything up to Greenwich to do a concert Thursday night," Silver said.

Silver said Ross, who could not be reached by phone yesterday, told him she loved the teen center and viewed the concert as a gift to the town to kick off the summer. Ross understood that the only way to keep the concert a local event would be to announce it mere days before it happened, Silver said.

"Her point is very well taken, otherwise it would just be utter chaos," he said. "She really just wants it to be a Greenwich-based event."

Silver said his first reaction was that the logistics of setting up the concert were too overwhelming.

"I was like, 'How are we going to make this happen?' " he recalled. "But she told me, 'Where there's a will there's a way.' And she's right."

The free concert will be held at Roger Sherman Baldwin Park, and 300 prime seats with passes to a special reception with Ross after the show are selling for $250 each. More than 100 of those tickets had sold by noon yesterday, and the center is considering adding 100 more, Silver said.

All funds raised will benefit the teen center. Located beside the park, the center is a nonprofit organization that promotes a drug- and alcohol-free environment for high-school age teens to socialize and take on active roles in the community.

Silver said he sees Ross' sons at the teen center every week.

"Evan was involved in teaching a hip-hop dance class, and Ross is very active in the Young Life program," he said.

Silver said Ross purposely scheduled the concert to coincide with Greenwich High School's graduation ceremonies Thursday night, to offer the 18-year-olds an alcohol-free option to celebrate their accomplishments.

"We wish for no one to bring alcohol to the event," Silver said.

The concert won't be the first time Ross has taken time out of her busy schedule to benefit the town. Six years ago Ross performed at Greenwich Academy, from which her daughter, Chudney Silberstein, graduated in 1993. All proceeds went toward the academy's college scholarship fund.

"She is a genuine, giving human being. It's an amazing thing she's doing," Silver said. "I'm very proud of her association with us."

-- Patron tickets are still available at $250 each by calling (203) 629-5744, or by stopping by the teen center at 100 Arch St.

MARCH 26, 2004: DIANA TURNS 60 YEARS YOUNG. HAPPY BIRTHDAY!

(Published March 25, 2004)

Diana at Wembley

Well, what can I say that hasn't already been said. Diana is truly back in form, and on Wembley last Thursday (March 18), she showed the crowd (the concert was sold out) that at soon-to-be-60 she is still an entertainer on top of the game. She did a version of "Love Child" that was really funky and had a lot of attitude, and she got standing ovations after almost every song she performed. Other amazing moments included an accappella encore of "If We Hold On Together", and a very emotional "Lady Sings..." segment. "Reflections" was yet another highlight, and it's great to hear all the Supremes songs in full versions again, after too many years of being part of medleys. "The Boss" turned the arena into a disco, as did "I'm Coming Out", "Chain Reaction" and "Upside Down".
She didn't talk that much this evening, but put her heart and soul into each song. She did however mention that she's been through a rough couple of years, and that she was thankful for the support from her fans, to which the audience responded with a standing ovation that seemed to go on forever. Diana seemed very humbled and touched, and this was a night of true emotions - somehow the personal turmoil that she's been through has made her, if possible, an even better and stronger performer than before. Even her rendition of the sugary"Endless Love" took a new meaning when she sung it for Katinka (eldest daughter of her recently deceased ex-husband) who was there to see her "step mother" perform. Yes, this night Diana Ross let the music do the talking, and I don't ever think I've been so touched by a performance. I also love the fact that the ballads has been toned down, with a much more acoustic sound to them. "When You Tell Me That You Love Me" is almost a completely new song as performed on this tour, with Diana's voice doing the magic instead of being drowned by blaring instruments.
And yes, she is still beautiful - no picture can do her justice. In short, this turned out to be a magic evening of fantastic music and lots of emotions. The love affair between Diana Ross and her (European) fans seems to go on forever, and rightly so. The lady is still (and yes, here's the tabloid punch line)... Supreme. /Mike

P.S. The tour is now over (it ended with the extra concert in Dublin, March 20), but it's been said that Diana Ross is discussing a possible U.S. tour. Fingers crossed...

More pictures

Thanks for the overwhelming response to my questions. Here is a few pictures that appeared in Dutch magazines after the Ahoy concert.

And here is a few pictures from Hennie who had the pleasure to attend the Ahoy (Rotterdam) concert. A big THANK YOU, Hennie!

Philippe from France reports that the Paris concert was as breathtaking and wonderful as the Rotterdam and Antwerp concerts. The audience reportedly became ecstatic during the second half of the concert, and especially when Diana sang Ain't No Mountain High Enough. Fellow French fan, Jean-Marc, wrote (among other things) the following about the Paris concert:

The 3 "Lady" songs she performed were full renditions of "Fine and Mellow", "Don't explain" and "My man".
Then, as opposed to the Rotterdam show song list, she didn't perform "Missing you", "It's my turn" or "Endless love". Instead, she sang her full length slow version of "Reach out, I'll be there" as well as "Reach out and touch..." without the audience participation routine.
It was altogether a great great show, Diana seems to have learned from her problems, failures and troubles in life - she now appears more humble and human although she is still the glamorous lady we all love and admire.
The 5 gowns + coats she wears during the show are as outrageous as one can expect and in spite of a little tummy (she's had 4 children!), her figure and body are fantastic... let's not forget she's turning 60 in a few days (as she reminded us during the show)!

Anthony from Belgium gave us a few more details about the merchandise sold at the concert: A tour programme (as pictured below), the Diana Ross doll, a small teddy bear with a Diana Ross T-shirt and finally T-shirts in three colours (black, pink and light blue).

Keep the information coming! I will gladly publish entire reviews, both from fans and selected reviews from magazines and newspapers. Mail me at webmaster@diana-web.com.

Set list and info on the new Diana Ross tour

Here is a set list from the Rotterdam and Antwerp en concerts, thanks to Michael and Jeroen. Fan Helmut reports that merchandise for sale at the concerts includes tour programme, T-shirts, the recent Diana Ross doll and some sort of teddy bear! More information is appreciated, contact me at webmaster@diana-web.com. I will attend the Wembley concert and I intend to share my thoughts on that show a few days later. It's great to have Diana back on stage, looking and sounding better than ever! /Mike

Arne Naess, Diana's ex-husband, killed in accident

CAPE TOWN (AFP) - A Norwegian mountaineer, Arne Naess, the former husband of pop diva Diana Ross (news), was killed in a mountain accident in South Africa, police said.

Captain Etienne Terblanche said Naess, from Oslo and in his 60s, fell to his death at 12:30 pm (1030 GMT) on a mountain in the wine producing town of Franschoek, about 80 kilometres (50 miles) north of Cape Town."Mr Naess was a guest on the farm Lomarins in Franschoek. He went climbing at 8:00 am this morning and fell to his death at about 12:30 pm," Terblanche said.
"An inquest will be held to determine exactly what happened," he said.
A spokesman for the Norwegian embassy in Pretoria confirmed that a person from the country had died in an accident.
"A Norwegian person died in an accident in the Western Cape province, but that is all the information we have now," the spokesman said.
Naess, a renowned mountaineer, divorced Ross in May 1999 after 13 years of marriage. The couple had two sons.

ALL OF THE No. 1 MOTOWN HITS FROM DIANA ROSS & THE SUPREMES (AND DIANA ROSS, AND THE SUPREMES) FOR THE FIRST TIME ON ONE CD, THE NO. 1’S, WITH NEW MIXES PLUS A BONUS REMIX (Press release)

The Beatles and Elvis had theirs. Now it’s the ladies’ turn, as every No. 1 Motown hit from Diana Ross, The Supremes, and Diana Ross & The Supremes is presented on one CD for the first time. 'Diana Ross & The Supremes: The No. 1’s' (Motown/UTV Records), released February 3, 2004, features 23 classics from the Sixties, Seventies and Eighties, each newly digitally remastered, plus a new bonus remix of “You Keep Me Hangin’ On,” from the U.K.’s top pop remix team, Almighty Associates. In addition, all 15 of the Supremes tracks are heard in new mixes, direct from the Motown session tapes, offering the best fidelity of any Supremes and/or Ross collection.

From “Where Did Our Love Go” in 1964 to “Endless Love” in 1982, The No. 1’s spans 18 years in the history of artists who changed pop music and pop culture forever. Every song influenced the next generations; every performance defines an era. The package contains a deluxe 16-page booklet with an essay by music historian Brian Chin, track annotations and classic photos, including rare images of each single’s picture sleeve.

The Supremes – Miss Ross, Mary Wilson and Florence Ballard – scored an unprecedented five Billboard Pop No. 1’s in a row in the Sixties: “Where Did Our Love Go,” “Baby Love,” “Come See About Me,” “Stop! In The Name of Love” and “Back In My Arms Again” (also No. 1 R&B). Also topping the Pop charts in the decade were “I Hear A Symphony,” “You Can’t Hurry Love” (No. 1 R&B), “You Keep Me Hangin’ On” (No. 1 R&B), “Love Is Here And Now You’re Gone” (No. 1 R&B) and “The Happening.” Even after two significant changes in 1967, the group’s name became Diana Ross & The Supremes and Cindy Birdsong replaced Ballard, the No. 1’s continued, first with “Reflections” (a Detroit and regional No. 1).

All had been written by Brian Holland-Lamont Dozier-Edward Holland, Jr. and produced by Brian Holland and Dozier. The Supremes then scored Pop No. 1’s via other writer-producers with “Love Child,” “I’m Gonna Make You Love Me” with The Temptations (No. 1 Pop and R&B Cashbox) and “Someday We’ll Be Together” (No. 1 R&B).

In the Seventies, Ross went solo. The Supremes, with Jean Terrell in the lead, hit No. 1 R&B with “Stoned Love.” Ross would claim the top spot on various charts several more times on Motown, including these eight: Ashford & Simpson’s “Ain’t No Mountain High Enough” (No. 1 Pop/R&B) and “The Boss” (No. 1 Dance); Michael Masser’s Pop No. 1’s “Touch Me In The Morning” and “Theme From Mahogany (Do You Know Where You’re Going To)” (also No. 1 Adult Contemporary); “Love Hangover” (No. 1 Pop, R&B and Dance), and Bernard Edwards and Nile Rodgers’ “Upside Down” (No. 1 Pop, R&B and Dance) and “I’m Coming Out” (No. 1 Dance), the latter two opening the Eighties. “Endless Love,” a duet with Lionel Richie, who also wrote and produced the song, was No. 1 Pop, R&B and Adult Contemporary, and No. 1 on the U.K. Pop chart, in 1981.

Today, the most successful female group in Pop history, and most successful solo female artist in Pop history, are still No. 1.

It's remarkable to consider that Diana Ross's career spans over 40 years. She first signed with Motown back in January 1961. As lead singer of the World's most successful female group the Supremes, and as a solo artist from 1969, Diana has achieved a total of 28 UK Top 10 hits - altogether spending a total of 1,466 weeks on the UK singles and albums charts, equal to over 28 years of chart action. She is the most prolific American female singer in UK chart history, singing lead vocals on at least one hit per year for an incredible 33 consecutive years (1964-1996). She has also had more albums on the UK chart than any other American female artist.

And even today, almost 40 years since she first reached the No.1 position in both the USA and UK charts with the June 1964 hit "Where Did Our Love Go" (the first of a number of consecutive no.1 hits in the US), Diana Ross is still winning awards and receiving accolades. September 2003 saw Diana collect the Legendary Female Artist award from radio station Capital Gold, voted for entirely by the public collectively through Capital Gold, VH-1 and readers of a national newspaper, in a category which also saw nominees Tina Turner, Whitney Houston, Madonna, and Annie Lennox.

Renowned for her lavish on-stage costumes, and intimate live performances, Diana's Live Love tour is to be performed in the round at all UK venues except Glasgow. UK ticket prices range from GBP30 to GBP45 depending on venue, from Ticketmaster's 24-hour credit card hotline 0870 400 0688 or online at www.cclive.co.uk
